Diego’s explanation of the panel painting called “ Masked Madonna & Child” 2019

I painted a small politically charged painting called “Masked Madonna & Child”. I used very old techniques of panel painting that have been passed down from Medieval times in Europe.  I also used an ancient Medieval design format used for important religious figures. I used this old format in order to make my images powerful and aesthetically satisfying.

The central Madonna & child imagery has been used in countless 13th century Italian paintings. My Madonna wears a WWI style gas mask. The child is holding a burning globe in one of his hands. The imagery is intended to inspire thoughts concerning the problem of global air pollution.  The burning red globe represents our Earth in deep crisis.

This political art will not directly make any positive changes in society concerning global warming due to fossil fuels. This art will only document my perspective toward our current environmental conditions. Face it! Our world is in a state of environmental emergency! Our air is no longer safe to breathe! We must make positive change now!
