I have studied history and politics for many years. Periodically I will see some very

old black and white films of Paris under Nazi occupation during WWII. Sadly, our society has many similarities. Here are a few examples: small businesses closed, severe travel restrictions, public gatherings are illegal, citizens being labeled “essential workers”, elderly who have COVID-19 intentionally left to die in hospitals, and universities and schools closed.

To make social matters worse, Donald Trump’s behavior is highly dictictorial rather than that of an elected representative of a democracy. Just like old dictators in the past, Trump uses verbal threats and vicious insults against anyone that might disagree with him on anything. Trump uses the media to manipulate a specific demographic just like Benito Mussolini used the news media to motivate the Italian population during WWII. Trump also gives public speeches using an angry face and exaggerated arm and hand gestures,  just like Mussolini. Trump’s slogan “ Make America Great Again” is very similar to Mussolini telling mass crowds of his desire to bring Italy back to the former greatness of the ancient Roman Empire.    

Now is the time for all creatives to criticize evil leaders and social oppression. Artists have traditionally become the voice for those without the means of expression.  Art documents injustice. Art is a catalyst for intellectual examination and social action. Trump is the Mussolini of our era.
